What causes global warming and what are the potential consequences?
Screen 4 of 8

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT
CO2 and other anthropogenic gases (gases produced by human activity) absorb longer-wavelength infrared radiation, or heat. These gases trap heat much like glass does in a greenhouse. This trapping of heat is called the greenhouse effect. Gases that absorb infrared radiation are called greenhouse gases (GH gases). The additional warming that may be produced by increased levels of GH gases is called the enhanced greenhouse effect.
