SUMMARY
We have discussed individual biomes worldwide
and what distinguishes them from one another.
But it's also important to note that biomes sometimes
intergrade with each other at their boundaries.
This kind of transition zone is called an ecotone.
A good place to see an ecotone is at the border
between tundra and taiga where tundra vegetation
grows in between small, scattered clumps of conifer
trees.
Biomes also may change over
time as gradual climate shifts influence the kinds
of plants and animals that are able to survive
in an environment. For this reason, long-term
global warming may have major effects on the boundaries
of biomes and where they occur, if temperatures
regionally or worldwide continue to rise.
