What are the mechanisms underlying some animal behaviors?
Screen 8 of 8

SUMMARY
Sponges show some responses, but these are not considered true behaviors because these animals lack a nervous system. Organisms such as worms and mollusks exhibit rather complex behaviors and responses, but behavior is most complex among the vertebrate animals. Although in many fish species the females simply lay eggs that the males swim over to fertilize, some fish exhibit true courtship behaviors. Birds and mammals also exhibit a wide variety of behaviors, both innate and learned. Animal behavior may be affected by habituation and/or imprinting.

Animal behaviors address where an animal lives, what it eats, how and when it mates, how it relates to others of its own species and other species, what time of day it sleeps, and more.
