What really happens to food as it travels through the digestive tract?
Screen 3 of 3

SUMMARY
Digestion begins in the mouth and ends in the small intestine. The mouth, esophagus, stomach, and small intestine actively process food with chemical assistance from the pancreas and liver. Carbohydrate digestion begins in the mouth, protein digestion begins in the stomach, and all digestion is completed in the small intestine.

Once digestion is completed, nutrients are processed for storage or energy use, and waste materials are eliminated through the large intestine and anus.
