What are your body's organ systems and how do they perform specialized functions?
Screen 4 of 12

THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM
This system consists of the large skeletal muscles that assist movement, in addition to the cardiac muscles of the heart and the smooth muscle of the internal organs.

The skeletal muscles that dictate our movements are under our conscious control, but other muscles, such as those in our internal organs and heart, operate independently of our consciousness.

Body movement is assisted by skeletal muscle tissue and connective tissues that together form more than 500 muscles.

Beyond promoting skeletal movement, the muscular system's other roles include the maintenance of body form, or posture, and the support of the entire skeleton. Muscle movement also ensures normal levels of body-heat generation and therefore helps the body maintain homeostasis.
