SUMMARY
Plants with secondary growth have an abundance
of xylem. The xylem is the tissue that provides
the support for the branches, leaves, flowers,
fruits, or cones in the shortest and the tallest
of plants. The xylem also is the tissue that makes
possible the transport of water and dissolved
minerals from the roots to the tops of very tall
trees. Secondary growth and transport are thus
interconnected.
The primary and secondary phloem
transports products of photosynthesis; fibers
within the phloem also may offer some support
of a plant organ.
