How do arthropods differ from one another?
Screen 9 of 11

UNIRAMIA/CHILOPODA
Distinguished from insects because they possess more than six legs, centipedes, members of the class Chilopoda, have long segmented bodies with one pair of legs on each segment. More than 3000 species of centipede have been identified worldwide.

Centipedes are carnivores; they have a pair of poison claws just behind the head on the first trunk segment. The poison delivered through these claws paralyzes and kills the centipede's prey.

The jaws of most centipedes are too weak to break human skin. However, human victims of centipede bites may experience swelling and pain similar to the feeling resulting from a bee sting.
