UNIRAMIA/INSECTA
In the subphylum Uniramia, insects form a class
that includes grasshoppers, roaches, ants, bees,
butterflies, flies, and beetles.
With more than one million insects
identified, insects are considered to be the most
successful group of animals on our planet in terms
of diversity, geographic distribution, and number
of species.
Most insects live on land, though
others inhabit fresh and marine environments.
Grasshoppers share the typical
body design found on all insects:
- Three body parts (head, thorax,
and abdomen)
- A single pair of antennae attached to the head
- Three pairs of legs attached to the thorax
Insects breathe by exchanging
gases through a series of air sacs and tubular
channels collectively called tracheae (the
singular form is "trachea"). Oxygen
entering these passages goes through spiracles,
tiny openings in the body wall, and passes directly
to the internal organs.
