  Part 3 | Chapter 15 Tutorial Home
How do mutations and chromosome abnormalities cause human disease?
Screen 6 of 6

SUMMARY
Many types of genetic disorders can cause human disease. Some disorders, such as Down syndrome, result from having the wrong number of chromosomes. Others result from having chromosomes with pieces missing, extra pieces tacked on, or pieces in the wrong place. Yet others result from mutations in single genes.

Knowing which abnormality is responsible for a disease helps to decide which diagnostic methods to use. Genetic counselors advise known carriers of genetic diseases what the chances are of passing them to their children. For more information on this process, try the Part 3 simulation.
