When a cell divides, the information
contained in the DNA first must be accurately
copied; then the copies must be passed to each
daughter cell through a precisely choreographed
series of steps. Daughter cells produced by mitosis
are faithful duplicates of their parents, containing
exactly the same number of chromosomes. In contrast,
daughter cells produced by meiosis have a reduced
number of chromosomes.
