  Part 1 | Chapter 3 Tutorial Home Screen 1 of 2

To fully appreciate this tutorial, you should be familiar with the concepts of:
• Ions
• Hydrogen bonding
• Organic compounds
• Hydrocarbons
• Hydrophobic interactions
• Hydrophilic interactions
• Functional groups
• Polar molecules
• Ionic bonding

After this tutorial, you will be able to describe:
• The structure of each functional group
• Molecules belonging to each class of compounds characterized by group
• The characteristic chemical behavior imposed by each functional group

Summary

Functional groups make life possible by altering and enhancing the chemical and/or physical properties of organic compounds and increasing the range of functions of organic molecules.

Living things are composed primarily of water and organic compounds. Hydrocarbons without functional groups do not dissolve in water ("water and oil do not mix"). However, most functional groups are polar or ionic, and do dissolve in water. Therefore, functional groups attached to hydrocarbons enhance the chemical reactivity of hydrocarbons.
